Antioxidants, eh? Bet most of you don’t know what they are. Ok, only gloating. Get a load of this: “Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) that can cause damage. Antioxidants act as ‘free radical scavengers’ and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.”
How, you may ask, do antioxidants control acne? Well, the antioxidants present in our skin neutralize nascent oxygen molecules, which are responsible for the worst skin damages. Therefore, antioxidants keep your skin supple and healthy, and also reduce bacterial activity. See, antioxidants on their own do not control acne, but they certainly minimize damage to the skin and act as a check on bacteria that cause acne.
It would help to know that the best sources of antioxidants are fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits like pomegranate, blueberries and grapes are particularly rich in antioxidants, as are vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, and green pepper. If required, you could take artificial antioxidants in the form of Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C capsules, but I would term this the easy way out, a compromise solution.
If you are lazier still, you could try antioxidant skin lotions that are available over the counter, though I would think a better option is to use natural pastes and lotions made from vegetable or fruit extracts, or even honey, which has excellent antibacterial properties.
