Here are some common myths about acne. Read to see if you can identify any of them.

Myth #1: Acne is contagious. This is not true because acne is a result of hormones acting in the body.

Myth #2: Having acne is normal & you must let it run its course. With proper care and treatment, acne can actually be treated. There is no reason why you should endure with acne and the problems that it brings.

Myth #3: Acne is caused by poor hygiene. Acne is not caused by dirt or oil on the skin, but by the hormonal imbalances during puberty. If you wash your face too often, you might irritate the skin and cause more outbreaks. Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. Refrain from using those face scrubs because they can worsen your acne problem.

Myth #4: Acne is caused by eating the wrong foods. There is not enough scientific evidence to prove that certain foods can trigger pimple breakouts. However, if you think that certain foods do worsen your acne problem after eating them, avoid them. Do strike a balance by eating the right foods that are high in proteins & fibre; and those low in fats and carbs. And drinking water helps because it flushes away those toxins in your body, thus keeping your body in optimal performance.

Myth #5: Squeezing pimples will make them go away faster. Many people like to squeeze the pimples because they look unsightly. Some believe that this will help the pimple to go away and makes the skin heal faster. NO! This will cause a scar to form that will take a long time to recover! In worse cases, you might end up with a face full of dents, very much like an orange's!

Myth #6: You should not wear makeup if you have acne. You should lookout for makeup & skin care products that are noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic (won't clog pores or cause breakouts). There are also products specially meant for concealing acne. Having said that, there are many other products that can clog pores and worsen your acne problem. Stop using them and consult your skin care doctor.
