Asian people, especially the Chinese and Japanese believe in the magical power of water and therefore they drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and this is the reason why most Asians are free from acne. The body produces a lot of toxins through out the day and those could be potentially dangerous toxins if not released. When you do not have ample water, the toxins start finding ways to get out of the body through the skin, and this is where you usually end up with acne.
Water is a flushing system for your body. It washes through your system and helps you release the toxins through out the day, thus leaving your skin healthy and glowing. The secret to a fresh, healthy looking skin has always been the consumption of water. When you drink enough water, internal organs get the refreshment to work well. Without water your body will try to work harder than usual and that is where you get a sense of dryness and dehydration; for acne prone people, this is a bad situation.
The regular count of drinking water is either 8 glasses a day, 3 liters a day or half of the bodyweight in ounces a day. This doesn’t mean that you should end up consuming more than needed water as this will make you loose valuable minerals too. As it is a fact that an excess of something is always bad, no matter how good or beneficial that object is.
Drink boiled water up to 7 glasses a day and you will gradually see the acne's reducing. It is though not at all a magical cure for acne; it is just a path for reducing acne affects. Maintain a fresh diet consisting of vegetables and fruits plus water and you will see that your skin will start to glow. Even people with severe conditions should adapt to this method of drinking water, as it will help remove most of the build up toxins in the body. But make sure that you drink boiled, purified healthy water and not tap water, which itself consists of toxins. Drink well, eat well and live well.

Acne is a common skin problem. It is prevalent in both males and females, of almost every ethnic background making it one of the most extensive medical conditions in the world. Being much more common in young adults, acne affects 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24, usually starts at the beginning of puberty when teenagers start to produce large amount of sex hormones which augment the formation of oils (sebum) from the sebaceous glands of the skin.

Acne is most common on face, but it can be found on the neck, shoulders and back. Acne most commonly affects teenagers but can affect some adults too. It is mainly caused by hormonal disturbances, inflammation, extra sebum production, follicle fallout, stress and use of low quality cosmetics. All these factors combine together and produce what we call acne. Low quality cosmetics lead to accumulation of bacteria on pores. Family history of a skin problem can also lead to acne production in teens. Acne may appear in form of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and sometimes it may appear in form of profound painful sores that look like boils.

Whiteheads and blackheads are considered to be first signs of acne. Whiteheads occur when the Propionibacterium acnes and trapped sebum accumulate underneath the skin's surface. Blackheads arise when Propionibacterium acnes and sebum are partially open to the skin’s surface and become black because of melanin presence, a pigment of skin. Papules and pustules (pimples) are also signs of acne. Papules are tiny, red, tender bumps that have no head. It is not good to squeeze these papules, because the result could be scarring. Pustules resemble whiteheads, but they are inflamed with a white or yellow center and a red circle around it.

If one has severe acne, he or she may see nodules and cysts. Nodules are stiff, large bumps below the skin that can lasts for months. Cysts are just like nodules, they are puss-filled with approximately 5mm or more in diameter. Some people think acne is contagious, but according to latest research, it is not, nor does it spread from one body organ to another.

With the kind of family history that I have, most of my cousins have acne in one form or another, except my cousin Deborah, who was the object of general envy because, at 24, she had perfect, glowing skin and was thought to have escaped the family curse. Now, at 31, she has the typical acne victim’s scarred and pockmarked face and has become famous in the family as the one that almost got away.

The point is that acne does not affect only teenagers. Plenty of adults (post-teens) get acne too, though no one seems to know why. From what I’ve read and heard, acne affects roughly 25% of adult males and 50% of adult females. People can develop acne, or suffer a recurrence of acne, into their 30s and 40s and even beyond.

By general consensus, adult acne seems to be tied up with hormonal irregularities, particularly in women, who are likely to develop adult acne if their menstrual cycle shows signs of hormonal irregularity. And most adult women are likely to develop rosacea, which is not exactly acne, but darn sure looks like it and can be just as damaging socially and psychologically.

Studies show that cases of adult acne are increasing, and the American Dermatology Association has found that the median age for acne patients has risen from 20.5 years to 26.5 years. In the USA alone, more than 17 million adults have acne. While many of these people may have suffered from acne in their teenage as well, many more have developed it as adults. The core reason seems to be the same as in teen acne: overactive glands that produce excess androgen and thereby stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil that clogs the pores and follicles in the skin. But does that make adult acne easier to bear? I wouldn’t say so.

During the course of my research on acne, I have been forced to change my opinion on several previously held beliefs, chief among them the firm conviction that bacteria cause acne. Now that I know better, it is easy to laugh airily at my earlier naiveté. However, I am amazed at how many people I speak to believe that acne is directly related to bacteria. So I’m doing my good deed for the day by telling you that there is no direct link between acne and bacteria.

Yes, there is a bacterium – first name Propionbacterium and last name acnes (P. Acnes, in short) – that lives in all skin types and is harmless on its own. However, the problem begins when a follicle is clogged. P. Acnes really comes into its own and starts breeding at an alarming rate under such conditions. As it breeds, it causes chemical changes that cause acne eruptions.

After the initial redness and swelling, the white blood cells start attacking the bacteria and try to get them out of your system, causing pustules. See, you’ll know what I mean when I point out that not a single acne remedy recommends that you kill P. Acnes in order to enjoy an acne-free existence. Rather, what you are asked to do is keep the follicles free by cleansing the pores and take steps to decrease sebum production. So it’s no point blaming the bacteria for something that it doesn’t do.

And now for some further good news: in 2004, European scientists sequenced the complete genome of P. Acnes, and even as you read this, research is on to find new treatments based on the new knowledge. “We have identified this target, and we want to see if we can block its enzymes that degrade tissues, and also block enzymes that interact with the immune system,” said Holger Brüggemann, lead author of a report on the sequencing, back in the July 30 issue of Science magazine. Cheers Holger!

Ok, this is only the <st1:country -region w:st="on">USA</st1:country> that I’m talking about, but consider this: 60 million Americans have active acne, and of these, 20 million have acne that will leave scars. And of these, only 11% will visit a skin specialist, even though the social taboo associated with acne is enormous.

I just had to write about this. With all the hoopla about acne, and how it’s the most common skin affliction in the world, I seriously did not expect to find this piece of information: ONLY 11% OF ACNE SUFFERERS SEEK HELP. I mean, seriously. Ok, this is only the USA that I’m talking about, but consider this: 60 million Americans have active acne, and of these, 20 million have acne that will leave scars. And of these, only 11% will visit a skin specialist, even though the social taboo associated with acne is enormous.

And what will the rest do? Well, 20% may visit a skincare centre, nearly 30% will self-treat their acne with OTC (over the counter) medication, and, get this, 40% will do nothing. And that is truly beyond my comprehension. Why would an acne sufferer not seek medical or any other kind of help?

One reason may be that not everyone takes acne seriously. How many times have people told you that your acne will disappear as soon as you stop eating burgers and drinking cola? Bull, I say, because acne is most often an inherited condition that will only go away if you make it. Among those 60 million folks I mentioned earlier are 85% of America’s teenagers, and of these, 25% will bear permanent scars. Don’t you think that’s reason enough to worry?

With the number of treatment options available these days, there is absolutely no reason why acne should be something that we just have to live with. So raise the battle cry: Acne Avaunt! That means acne go away! But avaunt sounds neater, eh?

If the headline above seems a little strong, I use it with good reason. From the way some people react to acne, they would be better off living in such-and-such BC, when lepers had to carry warning bells with them and shout ‘Unclean’!

Okay, I may be biased because I’ve experienced such reactions first hand, but ask any acne sufferer and s/he will tell you how acutely damaging acne can be socially. Angelique Hennart, a French girl who went to school with me and was one of the few schoolmates who could look beyond my pustules to the person within, once wondered why more research was not conducted on the psychological and social impact of acne.

I couldn’t answer her then, but I can now. I think the reason is that acne is not rare enough to warrant research. I mean, almost everyone gets it, and it isn’t threatening to your overall health, if you come right down to it. And yet, people with acne can be socially withdrawn, lack self-esteem, depressed or angry or frustrated, and even jobless, because they can’t face the world. Worse, because acne is widely – and incorrectly – associated with dirt, people assume that those with acne are ‘unclean’. See? I told you the comparison was valid.

First up, for those who have relatively light scarring, try some of the branded creams and ointments for acne scar removal available at druggists’. Most of them work fairly well for all skin types, but if you are absolutely not sure, you should consult a skincare specialist before buying. And to be doubly sure, perform the old elbow test. You know, the one in which you rub some cream on your elbow to see how your skin reacts to it.

For those with heavy scarring, the outlook is a little gloomier, sadly. To begin with, you’ll definitely have to see a dermatologist. The good doctor will then prescribe some heavy-duty medication – oral or topical – and ask you to come back a month later. For really heavy scarring, such as my friend Jacob had, you need to undergo laser therapy or peeling therapy, and the jury’s still out on whether these cause any lasting damage to the skin.

Jacob, though, underwent laser therapy and is pleased witless about it. His scars – which made him look like Quasimodo from certain angles – have completely disappeared, and his gloating has been hard to take. From what I have seen, and read, laser therapy is fine if applied within certain parameters. Once again, ask the doc what these should be for you.

For a long time, I would be frustrated at the fact that no make up manufacturer thought about the plight of acne sufferers and there were no acne-friendly cosmetic brands available on the market. After a prolonged wait, and equally prolonged search, I have finally located a few (still only a few) brands that people with acne can use. Now I’m not sure whether I ought to turn this blog into an advertising platform, so I will perhaps not name the names here (you can go and find them on your own same as me) but be careful to use certain keywords: oil control, oil-free foundation, and water base.

The thing about acne and make up is that you use it both for concealment and prevention, so it can’t be like the usual make up. My friend Marie says her sister Gwen is thinking of wearing a mask to cover her face every time she goes out on account of her acne, but I know for a fact that the situation need not be so bad.

Using make up to hide your acne isn’t difficult, but you need to follow some essential steps. So the three things you have to use are concealer, foundation, and finishing powder. I am talking about women here, but men are welcome to try these too! Okay, when buying these three things, make sure they’re oil-free and they match your skin tone, same as you would if you were buying regular cosmetics.

I’m not going to waste space teaching you exactly how to apply the make up, I’m assuming you know that already, but I am going to tell you that you have to invest in branded products if you are going to get anywhere with your acne make up. Cheap stands for deadly in ths area, and I speak from personal experience (OK not mine ! but from my sister experience).
