During the course of my research on acne, I have been forced to change my opinion on several previously held beliefs, chief among them the firm conviction that bacteria cause acne. Now that I know better, it is easy to laugh airily at my earlier naiveté. However, I am amazed at how many people I speak to believe that acne is directly related to bacteria. So I’m doing my good deed for the day by telling you that there is no direct link between acne and bacteria.
Yes, there is a bacterium – first name Propionbacterium and last name acnes (P. Acnes, in short) – that lives in all skin types and is harmless on its own. However, the problem begins when a follicle is clogged. P. Acnes really comes into its own and starts breeding at an alarming rate under such conditions. As it breeds, it causes chemical changes that cause acne eruptions.

I just had to write about this. With all the hoopla about acne, and how it’s the most common skin affliction in the world, I seriously did not expect to find this piece of information: ONLY 11% OF ACNE SUFFERERS SEEK HELP. I mean, seriously. Ok, this is only the USA that I’m talking about, but consider this: 60 million Americans have active acne, and of these, 20 million have acne that will leave scars. And of these, only 11% will visit a skin specialist, even though the social taboo associated with acne is enormous.

If the headline above seems a little strong, I use it with good reason. Can you think of any other affliction that causes more psychological trauma, more social awkwardness, and greater insecurity than acne? I can, actually, and it’s called leprosy. From the way some people react to acne, they would be better off living in such-and-such BC, when lepers had to carry warning bells with them and shout ‘Unclean’!

Having acne is bad enough, but imagine living with the scars, and plenty of people we know have to do that. However, my fellow sufferers, I have been doing some research in this area. And I can now tell you that acne scar removal is no longer as daunting a task as it used to be. In fact, friends of mine have already begun queuing up for advice on acne scar removal, and I’m seriously considering setting up an agency.

For a long time, I would be frustrated at the fact that no make up manufacturer thought about the plight of acne sufferers and there were no acne-friendly cosmetic brands available on the market. After a prolonged wait, and equally prolonged search, I have finally located a few (still only a few) brands that people with acne can use. Now I’m not sure whether I ought to turn this blog into an advertising platform, so I will perhaps not name the names here (you can go and find them on your own same as me) but be careful to use certain keywords: oil control, oil-free foundation, and water base.
