In fact, friends of mine have already begun queuing up for advice on acne scar removal, and I’m seriously considering setting up an agency.

First up, for those who have relatively light scarring, try some of the branded creams and ointments for acne scar removal available at druggists’. Most of them work fairly well for all skin types, but if you are absolutely not sure, you should consult a skincare specialist before buying. And to be doubly sure, perform the old elbow test. You know, the one in which you rub some cream on your elbow to see how your skin reacts to it.

For those with heavy scarring, the outlook is a little gloomier, sadly. To begin with, you’ll definitely have to see a dermatologist. The good doctor will then prescribe some heavy-duty medication – oral or topical – and ask you to come back a month later. For really heavy scarring, such as my friend Jacob had, you need to undergo laser therapy or peeling therapy, and the jury’s still out on whether these cause any lasting damage to the skin.

Jacob, though, underwent laser therapy and is pleased witless about it. His scars – which made him look like Quasimodo from certain angles – have completely disappeared, and his gloating has been hard to take. From what I have seen, and read, laser therapy is fine if applied within certain parameters. Once again, ask the doc what these should be for you.

Types Of Acne Scar:

Before we go on about prevention of acne scars, let’s take a look at the different types of acne scars.

The types of acne scars differ according to the response of the human skin to the acne. There is either a loss of tissue at the acne site or there is formation of added tissue. Both these responses result in acne scarring.

1. Loss of tissue scarring: The following types of scarring can occur when there is a loss of tissue:

• Ice pick scars: These are generally seen on the cheek and are typically small with steep sides. Sometimes, with the passage of time, these acne scars can get bigger and deeper. They are then known as Depressed Fibrotic Scars.
• Atrophic macules: These scars are seen on the face as well as on other parts of the body. Due to the presence of blood vessels just under these scars, they are generally blue in color, but turn lighter over time.
• Follicular macular atrophy: These are very small whitish spots that typically occur on the back. Once macular atrophy occurs, it can last for several years.

2. Tissue formation scars: Also known as keloids, these scars are a result of excessive collagen secretion. When body cells secrete extra collagen, it gets stored as increased tissue, thus forming a keloid. Such types of acne scar are not as common as scars formed due to loss of tissue.

Sometimes, red color spots are left behind on the skin after a bout of inflamed acne lesions. These spots are known as macules. However, a macule is not an acne scar in the real sense of the word as it disappears with time.

Prevention Of Acne Scar:

Here’s what you can do to prevent acne scar:

• If you are prone to acne, take proper acne skin care to ensure that you do not get pimples. If you can prevent acne from occurring, you won’t have to worry about acne scarring.
• If acne does occur, start acne treatment as soon as possible. Consult a dermatologist who will help you in managing the acne. Make sure that you continue the treatment till such time that your acne disappears, regardless of how long it takes. Only by preventing excessive acne inflammation in this manner, can you hope to avoid acne scar.
• Never pick your pimples or any scabs that have formed. Your body has a natural healing process to deal with acne. When you burst your pimples or pick on the scabs, you are delaying the healing process, which in turn leads to increased acne inflammation and acne scarring.

Acne scar can thus be prevented in the above ways. However, if scarring does occur, there are various acne scar treatments that you can undergo that will help to remove the acne scar.
