Back acne or ‘bacne’ like all acnes, can range in severity from mild to very severe. However, in order to prevent further outbreaks, it is important to understand what causes acne and what some of the triggers may be for outbreaks. Then and only, then can a dermatologist prescribe the appropriate back acne treatment.

Back acne can appear in the same forms as facial and other acne. Sufferers can experience cysts, whiteheads and blackheads. These can affect anyone, male or female, ranging from ages 10 – 40. However, it is critical to understand the causes of this type of acne and what treatments are available.

Unfortunately, back acne does not appear to have any one major cause. So far, dermatologists and scientists have been unable to narrow the main cause to hormones, especially during puberty and amongst males. They know that the skin’s sebaceous glands swell and overproduce oil as a result of the increase in androgen hormones. This oil then combines with sticky cells to clog pores and hair follicles.

With acne, including back acne, clogging prevents the skin from self-exfoliating dead skin cells. As a result, the clog allows natural skin bacterium to multiply abnormally, causing tissue painful inflammation and the eventual formation of acne.

Though back acne is mainly found on the back, it can extend to the backside in some rare cases. The subsequent pimples can be quite painful as the skin on the back is thicker and thus any clogging is harder to remove. The deeper the clog, the more painful and larger the lesion can be. In fact, a clog inside a hair follicle is deep enough to cause permanent damage to the hair follicle, which eventually breaks under the pressure.

Dermatologist have found that the best form of back acne treatment is benzoyl peroxide (10 %), which is best suited for the back’s and backside’s thicker skin. This treatment can reach deeper into the skin, tackling cysts, whiteheads and blackheads.

Other medical treatments that work with other forms of acne have not appeared to work for back acne. In fact, it appears that such acne may be hereditary and that even a change in diet has no affect on it.

Interestingly enough, back acne in adults has shown no correlation with the excessive production of sebaceous oils. Even stress, which does have some affect on face acne, has little or no affect on it. Doctors do recommend plenty of exercise, a proper skin care regime and the continued use of benzoyl peroxide to prevent further outbreaks.

This recommended acne back treatment works best with the skin care regime. This regime must not include harmful chemicals, found in some soaps, hair shampoos, skin care products and moisturizers. It is essential to wash the back with clean hands and only twice a day. It is important not to rub the skin as it can cause further infections, and follow this with a mild toner, the benzoyl peroxide cream or gel, and a doctor recommended moisturizer.
